If you want to help the HDRA preserve rare varieties of vegetables, including potatoes, then you need to go to this link:
Adopt-a-Veg
Alternatively, are you looking for the ideal Unspecified Celebration Gift for someone you Love/Hate/Barely Tolerate/Are Very Fond Of But Sometimes They Drive You Mad?
Do you want to help fan funds?
Do you worry that the vegetables that you see in the fields are getting adequate emotional support in the difficult growing season?
Then we have the ideal solution. In collaboration with Preservation Of
Tatties And Tubers Organisation, the Croydon Home for Invalid Potatoes, Merseyside Assocation of SmallHolders and Alison-is-out-of-luck-I'm-not-doing-Walsthamstow the LFF bring you:
Adopt A Potato.
Either speak to Ang in person at Novacon/Eastercon or use the contact form on this website selecting "Adopt a potato" as the category.
You will receive the following:
- A certificate of potato adoption:

- Approximately monthly progress reports on your potato (see example PDF below)
- The pick of the potato litter at Novacon
Add to this the knowledge that you have rehomed a potato in a safe and a secure environment where they will benefit from the greatest of care PLUS provide a tasty meal. This year you will be able to select (hypothetically, I passed the order to Dad and then he changed it when he chatted to someone on the plot AND NOW CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT HE DID):
- Desiree Desiree scores 5 on the waxy/floury scale and can be used for great roast potatoes and chips, creamy mash and also wedges. Desiree is also sold as a baking potato. This striking red-skinned maincrop potato, with a light yellow flesh is very widely available. This is a Main Crop variety.
- Picasso Picasso tubers are round to oval in shape with white smooth skins and pink eyes. This is now a popular variety for allotment growers due to its high disease resistance. With Cara as one of its parents it has a great range of uses in the kitchen. A huge yielder and good storing variety.
- Wilja This variety has yellow skin, light yellow flesh. Moderately firm, slightly dry texture. This is a Second Early variety.
- King Edwards King Edward is very much a floury variety - scoring 6 on the waxy / floury scale, which is one of the highest scores. This makes King Edward a great variety for smooth creamy mash and light fluffy roast potatoes and even chips. King Edward is a traditional maincrop variety and has a white skin with very distinctive pink colouration which makes it an easy potato to identify. It has a creamy coloured flesh and a good flavour and is widely available. This is a Main Crop variety.
